Cantoque Ensemble is an Icelandic vocal ensemble consisting of 8-12 professional singers. Members of Cantoque Ensemble have sung roles at the Icelandic opera and abroad, worked with various orchestras in Iceland as well as on the international stage, and many have been nominated as Singers of the year at the Icelandic Music awards.

The group was formed in 2017 and their first project was a collaboration with the nordic baroque orchestras Höör Barock from Sweden and Camerata Öresund from Denmark. They held concerts in Iceland, Denmark and Sweden, and their concert in Skálholt Summer music festival got a nomination for best performance of the year at the Icelandic Music price.

Cantoque Ensemble travelled around Iceland in the summer of 2018, performing an a cappella program of new arrangements of Icelandic folksongs, there of some that were written for the group. In 2018 they also performed Bach Cantatas under the direction of renowned baroque conductor Andreas Spering.

In 2019 the Ensemble collaborated with the Icelandic baroque group Barokkbandið Brák and they performed Bach´s St. John´s passion in Reykjavík in November under the direction of exciting young Icelandic conductor Steinar Logi Helgason. The year after, in 2020 they performed two programs of contemporary Icelandic choir music in Skálholt summer festival and at the Songfestival in Hafnarborg under the direction of Steinar Logi.

In the summer of 2021 the ensemble took part in the project Nordic Echo with Camerata Öresund from Denmark as well as Ensemble Nylandia from Finland, performing music by J. S. Roman, J. S. Bach as well as old Icelandic hymns and contemporary Icelandic Music in Iceland, Finland and Denmark. This concert was also nominated as the best classical concert of the year at the Icelandic Music Price.

In March of 2022 the Ensemble once again collaborated with Steinar Logi Helgason to do a portret concert of the works of renowned composer Jón Nordal. The concert was a collaboration of Dark Music Days in Reykjavík and Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral and recieved rave reviews.

In 2023 Cantoque Ensemble collaborated with Choeur3 under the leadership of Abélia Nordmann and performed Messe a double choeur by Frank Martin in Switzerland, France and Germany as well as in Iceland. The ensemble also held 3 concerts with contemporary Icelandic choir music in Switzerland as well as a masterclass for choir leaders.

In 2024 the ensemble continued their collaboration with Dark Music Days and did a concert portraying the choir music of Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson. The concert got a 5 star review from Iceland´s leading music critic.

In the next few weeks Cantoque Ensemble will travel to Denmark where the group will have two concerts with Icelandic music as well as participating in a performance of Jakob Buchanan´s Jazz Requiem with the Århus Jazz orchestra.
