Julia Hantschel

Julia grew up in Aachen, Germany, and began playing the oboe at age 12. She went on to study in Musikhochschule Freiburg im Breisgau, in the Sibelius Academy Helsinki and lastly in the Hochschule für Musik Basel with Emmanuel Abbühl. During her studies she played in several orchestras in Switzerland and Germany, and gained further orchestral experience for one year in the Southbank Sinfonia, a training orchestra based in London. She was also briefly a member of the Southern Sinfonia Dunedin, New Zealand, while there on a 6-month school exchange. From 2015-2017, Julia lived in Japan to play in the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra (HPAC), before being appointed principal oboe in the Wermland Opera in Karlstad, Sweden. Julia performed as a soloist with Bachcollegium Freiburg, Kammerorchester Basel, Southbank Sinfonia London and the Wermland Opera. Julia joined the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2018.
