Rannveig Káradóttir
Soprano
Rannveig Káradóttir, soprano, began her vocal studies in her hometown Garðabær and subsequently studied at Reykjavík College of Music under the guidance of Alina Dubik. Around her graduation in 2008, she made her professional debut with the Icelandic Opera as Annina in La traviata. In 2012, she continued her training with a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where she appeared as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea in collaboration with English Touring Opera and graduated with Distinction. Rannveig is a Britten-Pears Young Artist and participated in a Nozze di Figaro Workshop with Ann Murray and Claudio Desderi, a French Song Masterclass with Natalie Dessay, Laurent Naouri and Roger Vignoles, and sang the title role in L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Aldeburgh Music Festival conducted by Richard Egarr. In the years 2014 to 2018, Rannveig made a series of critically acclaimed role debuts with the Euphonia Opera Company at the Rye Arts Festival, including Violetta in La traviata, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and Mimì in La bohème. An international tour of Be with me now, which premiered at the Festival Aix-en-Provence, saw Rannveig perform in Amsterdam, Paris, Warsaw, Lisbon, Munich, Brussels and Aldeburg.
She sang the title role in Madama Butterfly at Rhosygilwen and Tatyana in Eugene Onegin at Whitgift Theatre in London. She performed her favourite role, Violetta in La traviata, again with the Euphonia Opera Company at the Drayton Arms Theatre in London and with Westminster Opera at Château de Panloy in France. From 2018 to 2023, Rannveig was a featured soloist and later a permanent member of the soloist ensemble at the Landestheater in Coburg, Germany. During this tenure, she performed a wide-ranging repertoire that included Laura in Neues vom Tage, Erste Dame in The Magic Flute, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Fedora in Die Zirkusprinzessin, and Rusalka in Fishing for Rusalka. Rannveig’s love and commitment to Icelandic art song inspired her 2016 album Krot – Icelandic Songs, created in collaboration with pianist Birna Hallgrímsdóttir. This collection beautifully captures the essence of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes and natural beauty, reflecting the country’s rich musical heritage and Rannveig’s profound connection to her homeland. Her latest project, mother:land is a staged song recital that follows the journey of an Icelandic mother through her dreams, struggles, and sorrows. The performance, featuring a selection of beloved Icelandic art songs alongside a new commission by composer Helgi R. Ingvarsson, premiered to a sold-out audience at Landestheater Coburg in May last year. Scottish-American pianist Mairi Grewar will join Rannveig to perform mother:land at Harpa Concert Hall as part of the Reykjavik Opera Days Festival, where they will also debut a mesmerising lullaby by Helgi Rafn Ingvarsson. A further performance with pianist Hrönn Þráinsdóttir will form part of the lunchtime series Tónlistarnæring at the Garðabær College of Music. In addition to her operatic career, Rannveig demonstrates her remarkable vocal, stylistic, and artistic versatility by performing jazz alongside her husband, the British jazz pianist and tenor Peter Aisher. Together with contrabassist Dietmar Engels, they form the band Paraphrase, performing refined jazz concerts in their monthly residency at Café Victoria in Coburg.
