Philip Barkhudarov, bass singer and composer, studied with Jón Þorsteinsson at the Conservatory of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Originally from Moscow, Russia, he grew up in New Mexico in the United States and holds a bachelor degree in physics and a masters degree in computer science from Utrecht University. He currently resides in Reykjavík.

Philip has sung in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia, and has sung such roles as Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Antinous in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, and Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri. He has sung various oratorio works, including Christ in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Mozart’s Requiem, as well as more modern works such as Pärt’s St. John Passion and Rautavaara’s Vigilia.

Philip is the artistic director of the new vocal group Kyrja, based in Reykjavík. Philip has also sung with a number of world-renowned choirs including Schola Cantorum (Iceland), the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Zürcher Sing-Akademie (Switzerland), the Santa Fe Desert Chorale (USA), and ANÚNA (Ireland). He is a founding member of Olga Vocal Ensemble, a Dutch-Icelandic male quintet that has toured Europe and the United States and produced five studio albums. During the pandemic summer of 2020, Philip produced Vox Virtual, an online singing festival, featuring world-renowned groups such as The Swingles, Ensemble Rustavi, and Cantus.
